Heterocampinae, Nystaleinae, Dioptinae, Dicranurinae

James S. Miller, David L. Wagner, Paul A. Opler, and J. Donald Lafontaine

443 pages, 104 species accounts, 28 colored plates, 50 monochrome plates. Hardbound with dust jacket. ISBN 978-0-9796633-5-2. Published in 2021 by the Wedge Entomological Research Foundation.

This is Volume 2 of a two-part revision of North American Notodontidae known to occur north of the Mexican border. A total of 179 notodontid species in 51 genera is recognized. Volume 1 (Miller et al. 2018) treated 74 species in 17 genera, assigned to seven subfamilies: Pygaerinae, Notodontinae, Cerurinae, Phalerinae, Periergosinae, Dudusinae, and Hemiceratinae. Here, the remaining 104 species in 34 genera, belonging to four subfamilies - Heterocampinae, Nystaleinae, Dioptinae, and Dicranurinae - are revised. In this volume, fourteen new species are proposed, and keys to the adults of all 34 North American genera and 104 species are included. Adults are illustrated in color, and male and female genitalia are illustrated by line drawings or photographic images. In total (Volumes 1 and 2), larvae of 155 Notodontidae are illustrated in color. More than 85 new life histories are reported, with larvae of these species being figured and diagnosed here for the first time. Included are representatives of larvae of all notodontid genera known to breed north of Mexico. Two addenda treat recent findings. The volume is approximately 443 pages of text. Included are 50 monochrome plates, 10 color plates of adults, and 18 color plates of larvae. The book will be Smythe sewn (to lie flat when open) and hardbound in cloth.
